The original Central Corridor Energy Group (CCEG) was given the mandate to pursue the planning and development of a power transmission line, owned by the First Nations, to connect 10 communities to the provincial electricity grid.

The original CCEG included 13 First Nations:  Bearskin Lake, Cat Lake, Kasabonika Lake, Kingfisher Lake, Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug, Muskrat Dam, Mishkeegogamang, North Caribou Lake, Sachigo Lake, Ojibway Nation of Saugeen, Wapekeka, Wawakapewin, and Wunnumin Lake. (Mishkeegogamang and Saugeen subsequently left and re-joined the project in 2019)

All 13 members of CCEG agree that any and all proposals require extensive consultations. Steps taken to secure funding to allow community engagement to coincide with the development of the business plan.

Ministry of Energy releases Ontario’s 2010 Long-Term Energy Plan.

The plan includes the following: “[…] diesel fuel is expensive, difficult to transport, and poses environmental and health risks. According to analysis done so far, transmission connection would be less expensive over the long term than continued diesel use for many remote communities. New transmission supply to Pickle Lake is a crucial first step to enable the connection of remote communities in northwestern Ontario.”
