The Wataynikaneyap Power work programs that support the safe and reliable operation of the transmission system include Indigenous Participation requirements. Wataynikaneyap Power has a mandate to implement meaningful participation and involvement for community and business readiness, specifically to employment, training, and business opportunities. All work programs must include Indigenous Participation requirements that follow the Guiding Principles and WPLP’s procurement policy.
Business Opportunities
Wataynikaneyap Power is working with Opiikapawiin Services to reach out to Participating First Nations and First Nation businesses to identify contacts for contracting opportunities and to identify businesses that can provide, for example:
- Skilled trades
- Equipment
- Air and ground transportation and freight
- Fuel sales
- Snow plowing / Road maintenance
- Labour
- Accommodations / Venue rentals / Catering
- Translation

Procurement of goods and services will be done according to the Wataynikaneyap Power LP procurement policy approved by the WPGP Board through input from Chiefs. All workers and contractors need to have the core competencies and abilities required to perform the work in accordance with accepted safe utility practices. Wataynikaneyap Power is working with First Nation contractors (JVs) to assist with core competencies and abilities and business-readiness on accepted safe utility practices.
Wataynikaneyap Power recognizes that the land on which Wataynikaneyap Power has its head office is the Homeland of Animikii Wajiw. Gitchi Gami Anishinabek are signatory to the Robinson-Superior Treaty of 1850. The Wataynikaneyap Power transmission system is located within the Homelands of Treaty 9 and Adhesions; Treaty 3 and Adhesions; and Treaty 5 and Adhesions, through the true spirit and true intent as understood by our Elders.
