Ontario Energy Board Issues Notice of Hearing for Wataynikaneyap Power LP Application for Approval to Dispose of EPC COVID-Related Costs Deferral Account (EB-2026-0180)
Wataynikaneyap Power LP has applied to the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) for approval to dispose of a deferral account that has tracked COVID-related costs associated with the construction of the Wataynikaneyap Power transmission system. The balance in the account proposed for disposition, as of December 31, 2026, is $645 million. Wataynikaneyap Power has asked that the account balance be treated as capital and be transferred to the rate base. This transfer would be fully offset by a contribution in aid of construction from the independent Trust established under the Federal Funding Program for the project, such that there would be no actual rate base addition or change to Wataynikaneyap Power’s revenue requirement. The applicant explains that the only ratepayer impact would be the shortening of the period that the Trust could offset future funding for the system through the Rural or Remote Rate Protection Program, from September 2032 to September 2028.
This is a separate application in front of the OEB in 2026, and is not related to the Notice of Hearing for 2027-31 Electricity Transmission Rates (EB-2026-0152) posted previously.
